FATHER

Adam is considered the first father. We were created by God from the dust of the ground and given life in Genesis 2:7. It could be argued that Adam provided the parts for Eve.  Their first children, Cain and Abel, officially marked the beginning of fatherhood in the Biblical narrative. Like fathers today, Adam had many responsibilities. He had to be a father to his children, a husband to his wife, name all the animals, tend the garden, and report his activities to God.  In Christian theology, we find that God is the first mentioned in the Holy Trinity as Father and the leader of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The word or term “father” is recognized by most religions worldwide. As Christians, we think of God as the Father of creation.  Secondly, Christians think of the Catholic Church, where the priest and leaders are referred to as father. In Matthew 23:9, Jesus tells us to call no man father on earth except for the one in heaven.  This statement requires clarification to be understood.  Jesus was addressing the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, who enjoyed giving themselves grandiose titles and ridiculous names. Referring to spiritual leaders as “father” is accepted and not in contradiction with the Bible. Also in Genesis, we find Abraham, who in the rabbinic circle is known as the Father of Nations.  In Jewish texts, we encounter the words “Avraham Avinu,” which mean “Abraham our Father.”  The title shows he is recognized as the founder of Judaism and the patriarch of the Jewish people. The faith and the obedience to be a Rabbi give rise to the title Father. Islam and Muslims do refer to their god as father. The word “rabb” means those who care for us. They have a word “ab” which means sustainer. Islam says that God is our caretaker and provider. Interestingly, monotheism is important. If Islam were to call Allah father, it could be confusing to think that God “Father” is literally the father of Jesus in a real sense. Islam views Jesus as a prophet, which ironically is what they refer to Mohammad as being. The ritual leaders of the family and region are called Pita.  The Pita is not only the father of his children but also responsible for their education, ethical development, spiritual well-being, and religious training. Fatherhood is one of the highest honors and responsibilities in the Hindu life.  The Buddha is somewhat different in that the concept of parental love is the guiding philosophy of Buddhism. The Buddha is a spiritual leader and teacher, often referred to as the father. The Buddha taught Rahula how to meditate, seek wisdom, attain enlightenment, and practice virtue. These teachings actually form the basis of the Buddhist religion.

In the Americas, many indigenous peoples refer to their holiest gods as the fathers of the universe. I also tried to determine how many tribes are in Africa and could not obtain a single answer, so let us agree that there are many tribes and nations. Given the diversity and range of people, another assumption can be made.  At birth, we are entirely dependent on our parents. In third-world countries that do not enjoy all our luxuries, depending on mom and dad becomes even more important. It should be easy to see where the “god” figure comes into play when we look at our fathers. Our Father in Heaven and our father at the kitchen table are both extremely important to our well-being.  The title “Father” is undoubtedly a title to be cherished. It should also be evident that the Bible holds the word “father” in high esteem, as it appears 1,600 times in the King James Version.  Exodus 20:12 states, “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.”
